As we reach the end of 2024, we’re filled with gratitude for the incredible support that has enabled Care after Combat to continue supporting veterans in the justice system.
This year has been transformative, marked by significant achievements, powerful community support, and for many, a renewed hope for the future. In this article, we’ll be looking back at a few of the most notable events and achievements of our charity and its supporters, celebrating the hard work and dedication of so many brilliant individuals.
Notable Achievements and Milestones in 2024
Our work has continued to grow over 2024, with expanding partnerships and increasing support for veterans across England and Wales. The success of Care after Combat this year, has allowed us to reach and support more veterans than ever before.
This year has marked our 10th anniversary; a decade of supporting veterans in need. We celebrated this milestone with a special event at The White Hart, in Lincoln, bringing together supporters, staff, and veterans who have been part of our journey. The night coincided with the launch of our commemorative anniversary rum, created in partnership with G.H.Q Spirits.
While the year was a time of achievements for the charity as a whole, we’ve also seen personal achievements from the brilliant individuals who work alongside us. Moawia Bin-Sufyan, our dedicated Regional Coordinator for Wales, was awarded the Volunteer of the Year award and was nominated as a finalist in the Community Award category at the Welsh Veterans Awards.
We’re beyond proud to have the opportunity to work alongside those like Moawia who consistently go above and beyond to aid and improve their communities.
Supporting Veterans Throughout the Year
Through Project Phoenix, we’ve continued to provide crucial mentorship and support to veterans in the justice system. Our dedicated mentors have worked tirelessly to help veterans rebuild their lives, offering guidance, support, and hope for the future.
In November, we were honoured to participate in the Remembrance Sunday march at the Cenotaph, joining 10,000 veterans in paying tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. This poignant moment reinforced our commitment to supporting those who have served.
Community Support and Fundraising
This year, we’ve seen many fundraisers and events that have brought our community together in a powerful display of support.
Stuart’s inspiring Civvy 2 Commando challenge embodied the determination and resilience that we see in so many of the veterans we work alongside, seeing Stuart take on intensive training and physical challenges that culminated in the 30-miler (the final Commando test that Royal Marines must pass in order to earn the coveted green beret!).
Stuart’s challenge even inspired other veterans within the justice system to undertake their own 30-miler challenges.
There was also the Care after Combat bike ride fundraiser, which saw members of the Care after Combat team take on an intense two-day 190-mile ride across Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, and Northamptonshire.
The team visited 13 prisons along the way, discussing the important work that Care after Combat does and receiving some very warm welcomes!
Looking Forward to 2025
As we approach 2025, we prepare for a time of transition and growth. With the announcement of our CEO Adrian Kirk’s departure in Spring 2025, we are working to prepare for new leadership while celebrating Adrian’s tremendous impact over the past five years.
